HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS |

1945 | The UN Charter is ratified on 24 October. Support for the United Nations in subsequent years includes the development of UN simulations like the National Model United Nations (NMUN).

1950s | Eleanor Roosevelt serves as a keynote speaker at an early NMUN Conference.

1968 | The National Collegiate Conference Association (NCCA) is incorporated to assure the long-term educational integrity and financial success of the NMUN conference.

1974 | NCCA develops National High School Model UN conference (NHSMUN). In 1979 this conference incorporates as a separate nonprofit organization.

1990 | NCCA begins to develop the Southern Regional Model UN conference (SRMUN) in Atlanta in response to the absence of Model UN opportunities in the region. In 1993 SRMUN incorporates as a separate nonprofit organization.

1999 | UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan serves as a keynote speaker at the annual NMUN conference in New York City.

2007 | To better serve participants, NMUN is held as one conference at two New York City venues. More than 4,000 students attend, half from outside the United States. Attendance has more than doubled in the past 10 years.

IN THE NEWS:

NMUN ALUMNA INTERVIEWED BY BBC
Lauren Judy, a NMUN•08 USG, was interviewed in late September by the British Broadcasting Corporation. The BBC asked various young people from different countries were asked what they would say at the UN as their country’s head of state. Lauren’s remarks aired September 24, and are a testament to the caliber and passion of NMUN volunteers.
